The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum is located in Weston, West Virginia. This National Historic Landmark was principally an asylum for the mentally ill. Originally constructed between the years 1858 – 1881, it is purported to be the largest hand-cut stone masonry building in the United States and second largest hand-cut sandstone building in the world; next to the Kremlin in Moscow. Although the facility was officially closed in 1994, it is now open to visitors who can make arrangements to take part in Paranormal Tours and even spend the night. Allegedly, ghost sightings and paranormal activity are common occurrences with dead Civil War soldiers reportedly still roaming around the institution.
